What are you looking for?
Vintage style (retro) is gaining more popularity in interior design. Accessories and furniture in said style, are old-fashioned, stylised from other decades (usually the pre-war years or the 1950s, 1960s). Some interior designers incorporate rustic style into vintage. What are the characteristics of vintage-style curtains?
Every design style (also vintage) includes not only furniture and accessories but also wall colours. Curtains should be choosed perfectly to the shade of walls. Architects and interior designers recommend using RAL palette or colour wheel for this purpose.
There is a few basic rules for choosing curtains for walls and meterage of room. First of all curtains should have another colour that the walls. Remember, colder tones enlarge the room optically, and warmer – reduce.
Typical for this style, patterned and heavy curtains are only used in big living rooms. The choice of curtains also depends on the location of the room (south, north, west or east facing windows) and the window exposure. Retro-style blackout curtains made of thicker fabrics (e.g. velour, velvet) will work well for windows facing east or south-east. Voile curtains made of airy, delicate fabrics (chiffon, percale, voile) let a lot of light through and are therefore ideal for living rooms with a western or northern exposure.
The way the vintage living room curtains are mounted is also important. The grommets, tunnels and braces match the visible curtain rod, while the curtain rod hidden under the molding connects to the curtains on a crinkle tape.
Vintage style has its perks. Foremost retro accessories warm the interior, they bring to mind - especially for people born before the 1990s - associations from childhood. Involuntarily we return to the homes of our grandmothers, where lace curtains dominated - sometimes cleverly combined with curtains.
Curtains made of tulle, voile, satin or jacquard are suitable for the bedroom. They will give the room (often with wallpapered walls, in muted colours) a romantic feel. In the living room or kitchen, long white lace curtains will work well, providing good daylight in the room. Small rooms can be decorated with light pastel sheers (lavender, pink, mint). Remember to keep them relatively short (e.g. reaching halfway up the window). Long window covers will make a small room seem overwhelmed. Have a look here: How to measure curtains and sheers?
Curtains, kept in retro style, can be used in living room, as well as in bedroom. A lot depends of their colour. Heavy curtains (dark toned with many layers and patterns) are only suitable for large, well-glazed rooms. You should connect them with old-styled furniture to achieve vintage style. For rooms with smaller space, it is worth choosing light-coloured curtains with a subtle retro element (e.g. discreet lace, subdued floral patterns). Gold or cream vintage living room curtains interspersed with glittery zircons or gold threads are an interesting solution.
Not only the material and pattern matter, but also the draping of curtains in retro style. The distinctive updo cords are worth using. They are terminated with an elegant tassel. Curtains edged with such strips will look chic. The cords with the tassel are attached to a "knob" (metal, wooden, plastic), screwed to the wall. Alternatives to braided cords are decorative ribbons, buckles, rosettes. Custom updos include cords of coral, brass bracelets. The curtain rods, often decorated on the sides, are also a retro element.
If you're after a rustic interior, skip curtains and drapes. Instead, opt for roller blinds and shutters - whitewashed, stylised to look slightly dingy or possibly wooden.
In many arrangements retro sheers and curtains are hung together, necessarily in the same style. Single fabric window decoration can be accompanied by a roller blind, such as a Roman blind.
Retro-style windows can be decorated with decorations with an old-world feel. Plants (such as ferns), in small buckets or white pots, and candles in steel white lanterns can be placed on the windowsill of the living room.
Want to achieve a retro-style interior? Combine vintage-style sheers and curtains with equally styled window decorations. The right window arrangement will help to give a room a vintage feel, even if it has been decorated in a modern style.
Shutters and roller blinds are a relatively new solution that did not appear in our mothers' and grandmothers' houses. Not surprisingly, the presence of innovative window coverings can disrupt the vintage vibe. Architects and interior designers agree: if you want to combine tradition with modernity, opt for wooden blinds. Wondering whether wooden blinds are practical and whether they are worth installing? Absolutely! These versatile window covers go well with classic, scandinavian, glamour and vintage styles. The ideal accent for retro decor is the combination of wooden joinery with analogous blinds.
