Towels - everything you need to know about this essential piece of bathroom equipment

Towels are one of the most important pieces of equipment in any bathroom. Not only do they serve to wipe yourself after a bath or shower, but they also provide decoration and contribute to the atmosphere of the room. How do you choose the perfect towels for you and your family? What should you look for when buying? How do you care for your towels so that they last a long time and maintain their softness and colour? We answer these and other questions in our guide.

What are the types of towels?

We can divide towels into several types, depending on their purpose, size and material. The most popular are:

  • Bath towels - these are large towels that completely cover the body after getting out of the bath or shower. Their dimensions usually range from 70x140 cm to 100x150 cm. They are thick, fluffy and very absorbent. Ideal for people who like to wrap themselves in a soft material and feel comfortable and warm.
  • Face towels - these are small towels that are used to wipe the face after washing or washing off make-up. Their dimensions are usually 30x30 cm or 30x50 cm. They are thin, delicate and absorb moisture well. They do not irritate the skin and do not leave fibres on the skin.
  • Hand towels - these are medium-sized towels that are located at the sink or near the toilet. They are used to dry hands after washing or using the toilet. Their dimensions are approximately 50x90 cm or 50x100 cm. They are soft, absorbent and easy to hang on a hook or holder.
  • Beach towels - these are special towels that we take with us to the beach, pool or sauna. They are large, colourful and often decorated with patterns or inscriptions. Their dimensions range from 80x160 cm to 100x180 cm. They are lightweight, quick-drying and resistant to sun, sand and chlorine.

How do you choose your towel material?

The material from which towels are made has a major impact on their quality, durability and properties. The most common towels are made of cotton or its blends with other fibres. Cotton is a natural material that is soft, absorbent and skin-friendly. It can vary in grammage, or weight per square metre. The higher the grammage, the thicker and fluffier the towel. This usually ranges from 300 to 600 g/m2.

Among cotton towels, we can distinguish several types:

  • Terry towels - these are classic towels with a loop weave that creates a distinctive texture. They are soft, fluffy and very absorbent. They are suitable for everyday use at home.
  • Velour towels - are towels with trimmed loops that create a smooth and velvety surface. They are elegant, pleasant to the touch and hold colour well. They are suitable for decorating the bathroom or as a gift.
  • Bamboo towels - are towels made with bamboo fibres, which make them exceptionally soft and gentle. They are antibacterial, anti-allergenic and thermoregulatory. They are suitable for people with sensitive skin or allergies.
  • Zero twist towels - are towels with untwisted fibres that are fluffier and more absorbent than traditional towels. They are lightweight, soft and quick-drying. They are suitable for luxury hotels or spas.

How to care for towels?

In order for towels to serve us for a long time and retain their quality, they need to be properly cared for. Here are some tips on how to do this:

  • Before first use, the towels should be washed at a low temperature (30-40 degrees Celsius) with vinegar or salt to remove excess dye and improve absorbency.
  • Do not use fabric softeners as they reduce the absorbency of the towels and make them rough and dull.
  • Do not dry the towels in the sun or at high temperatures, as this can cause the colours to fade and lose their fluffiness.
  • Do not iron the towels as this can damage the loops and reduce the absorbency.
  • Replace towels frequently with fresh ones to prevent the growth of bacteria and mold. It is recommended not to use one towel for more than 3-4 days.
