What are you looking for?
A balcony window is different from a typical window - in shape, the way it opens and its purpose. As you can guess, therefore, curtains for both are different. We will answer the question, which curtains for a balcony window (taking into account the issue of material, installation, upholstery)? Are curtains the only option available?
There are many different types of voile curtains. Most are suited to traditional windows, while others, for example, are suited to balcony or roof windows. The most common types of curtains that are selected for balcony windows are:
· Roman sheers (they look like roman blinds),
· Sheers on grommets,
· Panel curtains (fans) - a non-standard window decoration that will work in any room, regardless of its character,
· Pasta (string) curtains - the characteristic construction (strings divided into several parts) ensures good light transmission and the ability to open or close the balcony window freely,
· Curtains with guipure - stylish and elegant, with hand embroidery on batiste (thin fabric), ideal for rooms with a classic design style,
· Standard curtains fixed with tape, e.g. Voile curtain - Verona 04 and Voile curtain - Verona 18.
Remember that buying voile curtains for balcony windows is not enough. You need to look after them, and that involves regular cleaning. Find out how to wash your voile curtains in the washing machine.
Voile Curtains for a balcony window can be made from a variety of materials - but the most common are voile, jacquard and tulle. The first material is very delicate and transparent. It can be displayed in a variety of ways - at times more elegant, at others more avant-garde or minimalist. It is ideal for the living room - whether with a classic or modern design style.
Jacquard is not so much delicate as it is durable, solid, hard-wearing. This fabric has a rather coarse weave, although it is possible to distinguish types with a thinner or perky weave. How much light enters a room depends on the type of curtain.
Tulle is the most delicate way of the mentioned curtain material. Like voile, it can be used in any room. Householders can choose between simple and minimalist or more intricate, patterned models.
Generally speaking, smooth fabrics are suitable for a balcony window (despite frequent touching). It is therefore advisable to opt for fabrics made of polyester or cotton fibres with a touch of polyester.
The balcony window most often appears in the living room, sometimes in the bedrooms. In this case, curtains should be chosen based on their material, size or interior style. Check: How to choose voile curtains for a modern living room?
The thickness of the weave affects the light transmission. If the room is sufficiently exposed to the sun, thicker, jacquard models can be chosen. For rooms that are not very exposed to the light or have a small space, it is advisable to opt for transparent curtains.
The size of the covers plays a skyrocketing role when matching curtains with curtains for a balcony window. Curtains should not drag along the floor - fit them to the length between the curtain rod and the floor. You can choose ready-made or custom-made curtains. The length of curtains in the first case is usually between 250 and 320 cm. The second option is free - you decide for yourself how long you want your balcony window curtains to be.
When choosing curtains for a balcony window, pay attention to the style of the interior. The look of the living room is different from the bedroom. Decorated curtains suit an elegant, classic style of arrangement. If you are dealing with loft, minimalist, Scandinavian rooms, it is better to choose simple and delicate curtain models.
The curtains that connect to the balcony window can have various fixings. Most often these are grommets, less often crease tape or braces. The castor attachment is by far the best, as it allows the curtain to be easily pushed back and closed (the castors move freely on the curtain rail). The crease tape is the most convenient and least involved solution (the curtain lays nicely in every direction). Braces, on the other hand, allow for more experimentation in terms of crease selection.
Whatever you choose, you also need to bear in mind the type of curtain rod for your patio door. A curtain rod will fit any of the mounting options mentioned. Less versatile, on the other hand, are rail or rail/rod curtain rods.
Making ready-made, fashionable curtains for a balcony window does not require great artistic or manual skills. It is enough to use a few accessories, e.g. fabric garters, decorative beads, delicate ribbons. The choice depends on the length of the curtains (we fasten long or short ones differently) and the style of the arrangement.
Shorter curtains for a balcony window are fastened in the middle or on the side with a band, a ribbon. Some architects and interior designers recommend the use of so-called lambrequins, i.e. long and narrow strips of fabric hung over the window. Longer curtains for a balcony window, on the other hand, can be fastened with a wooden buckle or a thick ribbon. According to the latest trends, however, the most fashionable thing is to let their fabric run free.
There is a lot to be said about curtains for balcony windows. However, let's not forget that there are other covers (internal roller blinds, external roller blinds) that will work just as well for the balcony. External roller shutters are the most durable and beneficial. However, their installation is quite invasive. You will find out how and when to install external blinds.
Roman blinds - an alternative to Roman curtains - are also a good idea. Examples of these are: Roman blind Basic - Roma 113 and Roman blind Basic - Roma 130.
