The installation of external roller blinds is a more and more frequent decision in the modern construction of detached houses and residential buildings. It's associated with the comfort and safety of householders. Good quality external roller blinds provide almost 100% shading of the interior. Some of them additionally have an anti-burglary function - their durable construction makes it difficult to access the window. So: when to install external roller blinds?
Are you wondering how to choose external roller blinds? There are several basic types of external roller blinds - they're characterised by different properties and installation methods. These are:
· adaptive roller blinds (standard, facade, surface-mounted) - the cheapest, fastest, least invasive solution,
· flush-mounted roller blinds - with better aesthetic qualities,
· overlapping roller blinds (overhead, on-window).
Firstly, let's take a look at the characteristics of the different external roller blinds and then explain the question of when to install external roller blinds.
Adaptive roller blinds will work well in almost any residential building. They're the most frequently chosen solution in already-built houses. They have an important advantage - during installation, there's no need to intervene in the construction of the building and therefore disturb the condition of the facade. The disadvantage of adaptive roller blinds is the necessity to install a box (cassette), which will look unsightly if not adjusted to the appearance of the building.
Flush-mounted roller blinds are installed in a special recess in the lintel - even during the construction phase of the house. It's best to take their possible presence into account even before the insulation is applied. The later the decision, the greater the financial costs for later renovation and finishing work.
Discreet and elegant, overlay roller blinds - as the name suggests - are applied to the window or door frame (more precisely: the cassette). The installers screw the guides to the outer part of the window frame, which are then installed in the window recess. Like flush-mounted roller blinds, overlay roller blinds are installed in new buildings (or renovations).
If you are worried about how to install external roller blinds, first define when this will happen. External roller blinds should be installed when the house is still under construction, together with the windows. Such a comprehensive solution minimises subsequent renovation and finishing costs. It will then be possible to choose a roller blind box which won't be visible (no interference with the facade) - such a solution adds aesthetic value.
The rolled-up armour of the hidden external roller blinds doesn't shade the window pane - the sun's rays enter the room through the entire window surface. It's also possible to insulate the characteristic cassette into which the window covering armouring is rolled. This box is mounted in the wall section and connected to the lintel - it is hidden in the building wall. This is the most popular way of installing external roller blinds in contemporary construction and the ideal answer to the question of when to install external roller blinds.
Sometimes the cassette of an external roller blind is installed on the wall, before the building is insulated, above the height of the lintel. This slightly disturbs the aesthetics - the cassette sticks outwards.
Sometimes householders don't know when to install external roller blinds - but they want to install them in a built, lived-in house. In this case, standard or flush-mounted roller blinds will work best.
Standard external roller blinds are fitted to the wall above the window or to the window frame in a recess. Their box (cassette) is oval or cut at an acute angle - this solution isn't accidental. Mounting to the window frame partially covers the window and therefore limits the amount of sunlight entering the room. A cut, oval box avoids this. A traditional rectangular one would interfere with the view. Some of the standard external roller blinds have armours with insulating polyurethane foam. This increases the thermal insulation of the building.
Concealed roller blinds are used in un-plastered buildings (their construction results from shoring up the lintel) - in the window recess or on the wall.
The best time of year to start installing external roller blinds is spring. The weather is good for renovations. The temperature remains stable - it's neither too cold nor too warm. The changeable weather conditions don't compromise the quality of all building materials used for the installation of roller blinds.
