Curtains for the kitchen - what material to choose?

Do you want your kitchen to be cozy and practical? At the same time, do you want to shield yourself from your surroundings? Choose the right curtains for your kitchen, which will be a beautiful decoration for the room. The key is the choice of material. Which one to choose? You can find out in our article.

How to choose curtains for the kitchen?

To begin with, it is worth noting that covers for the kitchen can be chosen in a number of ways. The first is to choose a delicate curtain, which looks good when long and short. The second solution is curtains for the kitchen, which are often colorful and have a decorative function. In this room, it is also worth opting for both, i.e. curtains combined with colored fabric. Roller blinds can also be a complement to curtains, serving the function of shielding the room from the surroundings.

Check out here how interesting it is to combine blinds and curtains together.

Appearance is the first aspect that is often looked at when shopping for curtains for the kitchen. There are many models on the market that beautifully enhance glamour, modern, as well as rustic or Scandinavian styles. This is of course very important, but a kitchen is a special place in the whole house. Steam rises here, humidity is higher, and working at the worktop or hob often translates into a lot of dirt. Greasy marks, stains, and food residues are just some of the types of dirt. This is why all finishing materials should be resistant to moisture and easy to clean. The same also applies to accessories, especially textiles.

What to consider when choosing curtains for the kitchen?

In the kitchen, thick and heavy curtains are often dispensed with. The exception to this is spacious interiors with many windows away from the worktop, e.g. in an alcove where there is a table with chairs. There, you can opt for more decorative models that match the color of the walls, for example. They are often combined with classic curtains. Typically natural materials such as linen or silk are unlikely to be chosen for the kitchen. As in the previous case, they should be located far away from the working areas in the kitchen. Nevertheless, the vapors can penetrate the fibers, which will affect the smell of the fabrics and their condition.

Curtains for the kitchen should fit to size and not obstruct access to the radiator or cabinets. Ideally, they should end several centimeters above the worktop. They can be hung finely, e.g. to one side or asymmetrically. In larger arrangements, you can opt for deep dark shades and patterned models. Small rooms should be decorated with subtle curtains that resemble curtains. Uniform, delicate and airy materials are fashionable and modern.

Choose the right size curtains for the kitchen so that they look aesthetically pleasing and hang freely in front of the glass. They must not be too long, as this room is unlikely to be a good place for the fabric to fall to the floor, which is more likely to get dirty than in the living room. Curtains are most often chosen for kitchenettes or spacious interiors. Remember to make sure there is space on the sides to reveal them, as well as on the wall to freely mount a curtain rod or rail. Hanging curtains on a window that is just above the worktop is not a good idea. This is where roller blinds, pleats, or delicate curtains will work much better. Check out what roller blinds are trending in 2022 here!

Curtains for the kitchen - recommended materials

In demanding rooms, such as the kitchen, cotton curtains will work best. This is a fabric that is easy to clean, so it can be washed successfully in the traditional way, in the washing machine. There are many plain shades to choose from, as well as varied patterns. Be careful here, however, not to overdo it. There are a lot of places in the kitchen where accessories, equipment or tableware are outdoors, such as on a shelf, countertop or bookcase. That's why it's not worth overwhelming this interior with extra thick, dark curtains. Think soft pastels or one subtle theme that will be consistent with the rest of the accessories.

In Scandinavian style, as well as in small and minimalist rooms (despite appearances, these are not the same thing), light, airy curtains, even reminiscent of netting, will be useful. However, such material must be delicate to clean, so beware of strong detergents or high washing temperatures. Too drastic an approach to this type of fabric can simply damage it. On the other hand, tough stains will not come off at low temperatures. This is why it is a good idea to remove any stains immediately.

Velour is also a recommended material for the kitchen. It is distinguished by its softness to the touch and also looks great. The fabric has great aesthetic qualities and also a fairly short pile. As a result, it sits well on the window and is easy to clean. These types of curtains for the kitchen will also work well in the dining area, as they have a decorative function. Velour also has a blackout function, which is worth considering.

Ruffles, trimmings, and thin patterned curtains are a common choice for kitchens. Not surprisingly, they look aesthetically pleasing but generally complement a classic or even rustic style. In modern interiors, it is worth looking for plain fabrics or another alternative, such as visually appealing roller blinds

If you don't want to choose curtains for your kitchen, you can combine blinds and fabric in one by choosing Roman models. They work great with any style of interior design. In addition, the fabric can be uncovered and closed as needed for the space.

Instead of curtains - pleated blinds

If you are not convinced by the idea of putting up curtains for the kitchen, you might think about pleats. They are most often made of a polyester material that has characteristic folds. The entire curtain resembles a rolled-up accordion, which is very aesthetically pleasing and visually interesting. Pleats can be easily incorporated into any style of interior design, from classic, Scandinavian, and rustic to modern. Pleats are made to the customer's individual measurements and maintenance is very easy. That is why they are the ideal choice for a demanding room.

Mounting pleats has another important advantage. Most models can easily be drawn from below, i.e. covering only part of the window pane, e.g. creating a barrier between the kitchen and people who pass right under the window or are in the building opposite. There are also models that pull up from both above and below. Then, only a section of the shade can be positioned over a selected part of the glass. In this way, the sun's rays penetrate inwards and at the same time, you can ensure privacy and intimacy. The two-way system, as it can often be labeled in the shop, is a very convenient solution. You can choose between pleats mounted without drilling and drilled. You can also match the shade of the fabric without any problems.
