The most common mistakes when choosing window shades

Are you planning to buy curtains, or maybe you're moving into a new flat and arranging your window decor? You're in the right place! In this guide, we discuss the most common mistakes when choosing window coverings. Find out what to beware of when buying blinds, curtains and drapes so that they look good in the room you are decorating and fulfil their other functions.

What mistakes to avoid when choosing window shades?

Wondering what to look for when buying curtains, voile curtains or Roman blinds? Their size is important - both too small and too large window coverings will bring chaos to the arrangement. Apart from that, pay attention to the material, pattern and colouring of the model you have chosen. Don't forget that a different window covering against the sun will work in a spacious living room and a different one in a small bathroom.

Not the right size

The most common mistake made when arranging a window is to choose a cover of the wrong size. By installing a cover that is too small, you will not protect yourself from too much sunlight penetrating into the room. On the other hand ,curtains that are too large will not fit into a small window recess. If you want to avoid this problem, order a suitable made-to-measure model - this solution is especially suitable for windows with non-standard shapes.

Unsuitable covering material

A practical window cover from the sun is also a well-chosen material. Do not use transparent voile curtains in the bedroom or children's room, and do not choose unnecessarily darkening models for the dining room. On the other hand, vertical blinds, whose panels slide to the sides, are unlikely to be suitable for roof windows.

Problematic assembly

When choosing outdoor shades, as well as those installed indoors, also pay attention to how they are installed. Don't want to drill holes in the wall or ceiling? Decide for non-invasive Roman blinds installed on the window frame or models fixed with special hangers. What mistakes should be avoided when choosing the installation of roller blinds? First of all, choose the right type - this way you will not have any problems opening the window or balcony door.

Curtain rod with curtains or blinds installed too low

If you have chosen curtain rod-mounted covers, be sure to place the curtain rod at the correct height. Hanging it too low will make the arrangement look unattractive. Mount it at least 15 cm above the top line of the window or just below the ceiling - choosing the second option will optically enlarge the room. Don't forget that the length of the curtain rod is also important: when buying it, measure the window recess and add 40-60 cm to it - depending on the effect you want to achieve and the size of the interior.

Design that does not match the décor

Match blinds, curtains and other types of covers to the style of the interior where you want to install them. You can choose their colour to match the window frame, wallpaper or furniture. Remember not to overdo it and not to combine too many patterns, textures and colours. If there is a colourful sofa in the room, forgo a richly decorated curtain; and for a classically decorated living room, do not choose a fabric roller blind with a modern pattern.

Overlooked functionality and wrong type of blinds

When choosing roller blinds and other window covers, their functionality should also be taken into account! While it is worth installing the same external blinds or awnings to prevent excessive heat gain in all windows, it is better to adapt the internal covers to the specific room. Examples? Roller blinds for total blackout work well in the bedroom, but floor-length curtains are a better choice in the living room. For the office, on the other hand, choose sunshades to improve the comfort of your computer work.

Downplaying the details

A carelessly hung voile curtain, excessively long curtains or stained roller blind material will not add to the attractiveness of a window arrangement. Pay attention to detail - not only when choosing your blinds, but also when installing them. And if you want them to look striking for a long time, clean them regularly.

Inconvenient handling

To make using the blind comfortable for you, buy a model that is easy to operate. Electric roller blinds, for example , which you can operate even while sitting on the sofa, are a good choice . And if you prefer more classic solutions, opt for pleated blinds operated from both the bottom and the top.

Driven by price, not quality

Remember that window coverings are meant to adorn your home for a long time, so don't put price over quality. This way, instead of saving money, you may overpay because you will have to replace your recently bought blinds with new ones. Impregnated materials, a blind made to measure, stepless light adjustment or a model with side guides are all solutions worth investing in.

External blinds that reflect the sun's rays or internal models?

Would you like to make buying roller blinds and other window coverings an even easier task for you? Consider whether external or internal roller blinds would work better in your home. The former are an effective way to reduce heat loss - from a few to even tens of percent. Just as importantly, they protect against excessive heat gain in sunny days. And if you want easy installation and to create a stylish window decoration, the second option is a good solution.

The most common mistakes when choosing window coverings - summary

Now you know what you should bear in mind when buying window coverings. A model that is too small or too large, fabrics that do not match the style of the interior or blinds that do not fulfil their function - these are just a few mistakes that are better avoided. In addition, don't forget to choose covers that are comfortable to use, made of durable materials and tailored to your individual needs.
