What are you looking for?
Interior design involves several aspects - not only the choice of furniture and wall colour, but also the selection of textiles and accessories in the right colour scheme. An important but not easy choice can be to match curtains to the colour of the walls. What are the rules for matching these elements? Which curtains go well with green walls?
There are a few basic rules about matching curtains with walls by colour. Of course, sometimes you can break them.
It is said, that in most cases curtains shouldn’t be the same colour as walls. Colder shades optically enlarge the rooms, and warmer – reduce. It’s a basic rule, that you should consider if you have bigger or smaller meterage.
The juxtaposition of curtains and walls can be different depending on the character of the room. The colour composition looks different in the case of a bedroom, living room, kitchen or children's room. As it turns out, among other things, the colour of the walls determines the style of arrangement of a given room, e.g. Provencal, Scandinavian, industrial, glamour. Think about your preferences.
When searching for colour combinations for curtains and walls, it is worth using the so-called colour wheel or RAL palette.
Bottle green in the living room often needs to be brightened – otherwise, you will get a gloomy and dark interior. You can make the room lighter by using white curtains (not only plain but also patterned ones) or accessories.
Some architects and designers recommend white curtains in brighter rooms (light green, mint, pastel). A lot depends on your own interpretation.
Surprisingly black curtains fit well with dark green walls – especially in bedroom. Breaking up the shade with shiny strip or overprint is worth it.
Is yellow a good fit with green?
Same as with white, the interior designers have splitted opinions about green and yellow. Some say that light yellow beautifully fits with bottle green, giving the room a more energetic, cheerful atmosphere. Others think that yellow only can only be shown through small accessories for example decorative pillows. Yellow curtains (and other decorations like picture frames, bedding or bedspread) are slowly gaining popularity.
Orange or pink curtains for bottle green room? Definitely avoid those matches.
Bottle green is an elegant colour – that matches the glamour style. Dark green needs to be brightened in the living room. This creates a beautiful, distinctive effect of stateliness - this can be achieved through dark curtains with a shimmering gold or silver theme. Both prints reflect light, bringing more brightness into a darkened interior. Some homeowners opt for a uniformly shiny silver or white curtain. This is a bold solution (as is yellow) that not everyone opts for.
Elegant bottle green can be broken through by colourful patterns. A lot of people choose curtains with floral theme. Especially you should focus on patterns in blue, orange, yellow and light green. Botanical motifs in patterned curtains for a green room, realised in the spirit of ecology? Yes, it goes hand in hand!
This idea seems bizarre – green (in different shade) with green? As it turns out, neighbouring colours will not blend together at all - such an effect would only appear if the walls and curtains were identical in tone. It fits: green curtains to a green wall!
If you decide on this type of effect, choose curtains a few shades darker, or in a different tone.
Green colour – surprisingly – fits with grey, beige. Baby blue curtains also can be perfect – they will create calm and harmonic interior.
Popular bottle green isn’t everything. There a lot of arrangements with lime, energetic walls – they match well with grey and white, which stop the lively colour. Orange or dark purple curtains for green wall (light green)? Yes it matches by the contrast.

Not every type of shutters fit green rooms. Aluminum blinds – despite metallic colour – don’t fit dark green walls. You would achieve effect of sad, dark interior. Wooden blinds are something else (be sure to check out how to choose wooden blinds for your room). They add a cosy touch to the interior, complementing the elegance of bottle green. Moreover - as it turns out - they can come in a variety of shades (not just brown).
