How to wash voile curtains in washing machine?

Washing sheers is an important house chore. The best way to clean them Is to wash them in a washing machine. Remember, however, that this is not as easy a task as it may seem. Be mindful not to overload the washing machine drum - too many lighter and heavy fabrics can damage the machine. How do you wash curtains in the washing machine? Is power washing the only option?

Washing voile curtains in the washing machine – preparation

Wondering how to wash your voile curtains so that their colour doesn't fade and they don't get creased? Before washing your sheers in the washing machine, soak them in warm water (temperature not exceeding 40 degrees Celsius) - for about an hour. If the voile curtains in question are extremely dirty, a mild, specialised detergent (e.g. with bleach - if the curtains are uniformly white) can be added to the bowl. In the case of very heavy soiling (e.g. grease from the kitchen, soup stain, cigarette smoke), it is advisable to change the water several times during soaking (always with detergent).

The relative ease of cleaning is one of the many advantages of classic curtains. Check if sheers are still fashionable.

Hand wash or machine wash? How do I wash my sheers?

Washing voile curtains in a washing machine is not that simple - it requires knowledge and preparation. However, it can be unquestionably considered a faster, simpler and more effective method than hand washing.

However, there are some curtains that must be washed by hand. We are talking about sheers that have elements stiffened with wide glue joints. Curtains of this type can only be washed in the washing machine if their stiffening is approximately 10 cm wide.

Hand washing also applies to curtains made of linen, tulle, cotton, voile.

How do you wash your voile curtains by hand? Simply prepare a large bowl of warm (note, not hot) water with soap or other detergent. Then wait for the detergent to dissolve. When the solution takes on a characteristic cloudy colour, you can dip the dirty curtains into the bowl.

How to wash voile curtains in a washing machine? Basic information

Are you wondering how to wash velour and voile curtains? While washing sheers you need to remember about few rules. First of all the temperature shouldn’t be higher that 30 degrees Celsius. It is advisable to use the programmes "Hand wash" or "Wash curtains" (this designation appears more on modern washing machines). These will help you avoid questions such as whether curtains can be washed at 60 degrees or on which programme to wash your curtains.

How do these programmes work? The rotation of the washing machine will be slower. During a slow wash, the fabric will have time to undergo an additional soaking process. The "Hand wash" mode also affects the fact that the curtain will not be too badly creased after washing (sometimes so smooth and unbroken that no ironing is needed). This is the perfect answer to the question "how to wash curtains in the washing machine so they don't get creased".

You don't need to wrinkle the crease tapes before washing - their veined structures are fine-tuned, and they let water through very well. The exception to this is white cotton ribbons, which absolutely must be wrinkled before soaking in order not to get a grey streak effect in the place of the ribbon.

It is not advisable to machine-wash big, heavy curtains. When their material takes on water during washing, the weight will increase several times. The washing machine may not be able to withstand such a heavy load and become damaged.

It is also worth remembering that velvets, plush fabrics and velours are unlikely to do well in a home bathroom, laundry room. They need to be taken to the dry cleaners - because of their texture and weight. When they come into contact with water, powder, liquid that is used at home, they can quickly become damaged.

How to wash sheers – step by step

All curtains and sheers must be folded into a cube and enclosed in a special laundry net before being placed in the washing machine. Decorative, additional elements must be removed. Another option is to put the extras (beads, braces, buttons, tassels) in separate mesh bags. When you have finished washing, do not take the washed fabrics out of the washing machine straight away. Let them dry. Leave them in the drum for a few minutes to drip a little before hanging. If a significant amount of water drips from the voile curtains while they are drying (very likely), place towels on the floor to soak up the moisture.

What should you do with the extra parts of the sheers when washing?

You already have a basic knowledge of how to wash your voile curtains in the washing machine. However, that's not all. Remember the accessories. The sheers must be properly prepared for washing, i.e. with the additional elements removed (e.g. stiffeners in the form of transparent bars or weight profiles). If these are left in the washing machine for the duration of the washing, the voile curtains may be damaged and the profiles may be bent or broken. If this happens, there is also a danger of damaging the washing machine.

Washing sheers and curtains – is that the only option?

Are you wondering how to renew curtains without washing them? There is a solution! Velour curtains can be freshened – without the need to wash – using e.g. steam cleaner or vacuum. The first solution is as follows: spray the curtain via a water dispenser (until the fabric is fully damp) and then use a steamer to gently iron the entire surface of the fabric.

Refreshing curtains using a vacuum simply involves vacuuming the textile. The device must necessarily be equipped with a round or oblong nozzle. A hand-held alternative is the distinctive carpet whisk.

How do I hang up the voile curtains after washing?

You already know how to wash your sheers in the washing machine. Wondering what to do next? Hang clean, washed curtains on special safety pins, slides, hooks - that is, pieces clipped into the crease tape - or other mobile hanging elements.
