Why do you need to clean your window pleats regularly?

Pleated blinds need regular cleaning - especially if you want them to look like new for years to come. They are worth looking after for at least a couple of reasons:

  • Pleats collect dust - and this not only looks unattractive, but also has a negative impact on our body. More specifically, the dust mites it contains.
  • Regular cleaning will keep your blinds looking their best for longer - by removing dust, stains and dirt from your window blinds, you will prolong their life. Not only that: you will keep the natural colour of your blinds and make them look like they just came from the shop.
  • Systematic cleaning of window pleats improves their energy efficiency - dirty blinds are less effective at blocking the sun's rays penetrating into a room.

Basic rules for cleaning pleated blinds

Wondering how to clean your window pleats? Above all, do it gently! Pay special attention to dirt accumulated on the folds of the fabric and the lower slats, as this is usually where most of it is.

Regularity is equally important, so remove dust from spots regularly, for example with a soft brush fitted to the end of a hoover or a broom - ideally every 2-3 weeks or so. This will make the job go more smoothly and avoid larger stains. And if they do appear, try to remove them by gently rubbing the pleats with a slightly damp cloth.

How do I clean window pleats so as not to damage them?

First of all, remember that pleated blinds should not be washed in the washing machine - put in the drum, subjected to heat and spinning, they are likely to get damaged. For the same reason, when washing them, refrain from using strong detergents and don't rub the fabric with a sharp sponge - gently cleaning the pleats is a much better idea. Just as importantly, do not iron these types of window coverings with an iron, and wash models made from treated fabrics a maximum of once a year.

How do I wash my window pleats?

The best method of washing window pleats is to do it by hand, for example in the bath or shower cubicle.

How to wash window pleats step-by-step?

  1. Carefully remove the pleats - fold them over and unhook the lower fasteners. Squeeze the 2 aluminium profiles and move the lower fastening bracket so that it is on top and the cable is no longer under tension. Then unhook the remaining hooks.
  2. Do a hand wash - use a mild detergent, such as a product for polyester fabrics. Liquid soap works well instead. Last but not least, do not wash the pleats at too high a temperature - water of about 30°C is best.
  3. Alternatively, you can combine water with a detergent of your choice and pour it into a large bowl, bath or shower - place the pleats in this solution for about a quarter of an hour.
  4. After this time, gently clean the fabric - do not rub the pleats too hard, as this can damage the fabric and lead to distortion of the blind.
  5. Rinse the fabric - remember that the water should not be hot, but lukewarm. You can use a shower head for this.

Don't forget that each manufacturer's recommendations on how to clean pleated blinds may differ. Therefore, before you start hand-washing, read their guidelines. And if you're after covers that are easy to keep clean, take a look at the guide: How to choose pleated blinds for your windows.

How do I dry pleated blinds?

Washing pleated blinds properly is not enough - remember to dry them properly too. To ensure that your pleated blinds do not lose their original appearance, do it as follows:

  1. After rinsing the pleats, squeeze them out of excess water - models made of thicker fabric squeeze several times.
  2. Pleated blinds must be dried hanging on the window - under no circumstances should you put them in the tumble dryer, as they can become damaged if treated in this way.
  3. Once you have cleaned the pleats and drained them of water, mount them on the window - this will help the fabric to dry better. Start with the handles located at the top. Do this slowly and carefully so as not to entangle the cords.
  4. Leave the pleated blinds hung in this way to dry for approximately 12-24 hours - This time may be extended in the case of slightly thicker fabric.
