Curtains in a poorly lit flat - how to choose?

When decorating your dream nest, many people wonder how to fit curtains in a poorly lit flat properly. This is one of the critical issues when considering the later comfort of living in your new home. It is to this issue that we have decided to dedicate this guide!

Curtains in a poorly lit flat

We all dream of a bright and spacious home that is ideally suited to the daily functioning of all members of the household. We all want to feel good, and without the right amount of daylight in the home, this is practically unattainable. Humans need sunlight almost as much as plants! When decorating our own corner, we, therefore, choose a variety of accessories, look for the best interior design elements and face a number of important decisions which will help us to arrange our space perfectly. One of these is certainly the choice of curtains, especially if your home is one of the less sunny ones.

Less well-lit rooms may seem uninviting, but this is no reason to definitely give up on a particular flat! Well-chosen curtains can brighten up a space. On the other hand, sunny flats also need the right kind of curtains. These should reflect the light. At the same time, it is important to keep the heat in the room, especially in winter. When looking for the best solution, there are several factors to consider, which we will talk about a little more today.

Not only the color but also the material

When choosing the right window decoration for a poorly lit flat, it is essential to avoid long curtains, which will only unnecessarily overwhelm the space and restrict the flow of natural sunlight. A much better solution are curtains, which, if properly adjusted, can significantly reduce the unpleasant impression of darkening the room.

It is worth remembering that curtains in a dimly lit flat should not only be kept in light colors but should also be made of light and airy material to allow the sun's rays to pass through well. Forgot heavy fabrics and rather for airy ones, such as tulle, which is translucent and extremely striking. Curtains in a dimly lit flat made of polyester and a touch of cotton will also be a good choice.

When it comes to the color scheme of the curtains, of course, this issue is also not insignificant for brightening up a particular room in the flat. As you can probably guess, dark and deep shades such as black, maroon, navy blue or grey will definitely not work in this case. Curtains in a dimly lit flat should be kept in light colors, preferably pastel and muted. The ideal choice would be powder pink, blue, white, ecru, or light beige. The color of the curtains should, of course, subtly correspond to the color of the walls in the room, and if you want to add extra variety to the space, choose curtains with a delicate print or a stylish pattern.

The right length of curtains

It would seem that the length of the curtains is of little relevance in a poorly lit flat. Nothing could be further from the truth! In this situation, the length of the fabric should be approached with great respect, especially when it comes to patio windows. If you exaggerate the length, you will completely close off the flow of light into the room in question. This doesn't mean, of course, that the curtains in a dimly lit flat should only reach half the length of the window, but they certainly shouldn't stretch across the floor. Try to leave a few inches of gap between the floor and the bottom edge of the curtain. You will then create a space through which sunlight can continually stream into the flat and naturally illuminate it!

How to install curtains so as not to spoil the decorative effect?

Hanging the curtains themselves is also important for the final effect and to brighten up the room. What is the best way to install them? The basis is of course an aesthetically pleasing curtain rail, the length of which should allow the curtains to be moved freely during the day. The optimum length for the curtain rail is 25-30 cm on each side of the window. Ideally, it should be mounted right at the ceiling, i.e. as high as possible. Then the room automatically becomes more spacious and the curtains cover the window beautifully along its entire length. When putting them on, it is also better to dispense with fussy bindings and other modifications that only add unnecessary weight to the fabric and significantly reduce its permeability. Curtains in a poorly lit flat should be light, minimalist, and made of high-quality materials that let daylight through very well! It is worth pointing out - not having a curtain rail in your flat does not at all mean that you have to give up your curtains. There are many ways to install them.

Well-chosen curtains in a poorly lit flat are the cheapest and easiest way to brighten up a room. They are also sufficient window decoration - with their use there is no longer any need to place anything on the windowsill. Even more light will then enter the flat, enlivening the space at the same time - and that is, after all, our aim!
